I had to get something TO-DAY due to an emergency and can't afford to be without a vehicle, so I had to make a snap decision, and went for it. 2001 Ford Ranger with nearly 190K miles on it for $3100.
Some of the reviews I've read online say they've got 500K, some say they crapped out at 60K.
KBB assumes excellent condition and put the retail at about $3500. This truck isn't in excellent condition, but there is no rust whatsoever on the body, and just a few minor dings.
I know it's always a crapshoot when buying used, but what do you all think? Will I get at least a 3 or 4 good years outa this truck? I'll put an average of 20-25 miles on it per day, driving on mostly the highway.
I'm not sure how you expect anybody to give any info on the truck considering you didn't say much about it. If it's the 2.5 4 banger, that was a good engine. The 3.0 V6 is a known problem child especially with pan gaskets. The 4.0 is a gas hog considering output and performance. The 4.0 is a high stressed engine so be careful and mindful about maintenance. If it has the 5 speed manual, those are another problem child. It's actually a Mazda transmission and is pretty weak. If it gets notchy in shifting, yer just before having problems. The automatics were pretty much trouble free. In regards to price, you didn't get a good deal but you didn't get screwed either.... depending on the powertrain, any options, and condition.
OP what engine did you get the 3.0L Vulcan V6 or the SOHC version of the Cologne 4.0L V6?
The thing about the 3.0 V6 is it has the power of a small displacement 4 cylinder and gets the gas mileage of big V6 and the SOHV 4.0L V6 is the best choice since it has 1/3 more power and torque and gets the same fuel economy as the 3.0.
You know what they say about beauty and eyes and beholders. Will this vehicle be used only to commute? If so, I'm kind of puzzled as to why a truck over a small car, but to each, their own. My initial reaction at reading the title of this thread was "yes, you were ripped off," but others here who know more about that particular truck don't seem to think so... I think that's a lot of miles for that vehicle and that money. At that price, I'd hope the interior was near perfect (for 12 years old), and mostly rust free.
Fasteners, hoses, and basically anything joined, sealed, or rubberized should be a good indicator of how well it was taken care of. My local O' Reilly's has 5 quarts and a filter deals for $16 right now. I'd suggest changing the oil right away. Look for metal shavings in the it. Good luck.
