Well, I voted "station wagon" but coupe would be a close second with me as well.
But as much as the few of us that can appreciate a big 2-door might like one, I would see the station wagon as a better business move. All 3 of the so-called "big 3" need to make some good business moves, and few mistakes, in the near future...
I drove an Ford Torino as a teen. We also had a Mercury Marquis. I grew up in the Ford family. When I graduated Medical School I bought a Ford Expedition.
Now, approaching mid-life, I would love to have a sports car (now that I can afford one).
I remember back when the FIRST Taurus came out in late 1985, as a 1986 model. They were hit cars back then and one of the most "modern" styled cars out there that set the styling trends for the rest of the late 1980s.
I remember may uncle/aunt bought one in December of 1985 (around Christmas). It was a loaded, LX model with the "keypad" remote on the door (which was a first), cornering lights and a plush velour interior. If I recall, despite being a beautiful car in the mid 80s, it had some transmission problems not too far down the road and it seemed to be a stemming problem on the early Taurus cars (and they were plagued with recalls on the early models). I think by late 1987 Ford let them have another one (a 1988 model) at a highly discounted price. The 1988 was not as of a "fancy" model (it was like a mid-line model, still with power options, but without the remote entry, etc) , but it turned out to be a much better car mechanically. Ford claimed the later models had been improved. I remember around the same time, I had another aunt/uncle that bought a new 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera (which was the Taurus competition) and mechanically, it was a better car mechanically I think, but the exterior seemed to be more flawed. I remember they kept taking that one back for some misaligned trim where the front bumper met the fender.
Then my other uncles mother in law bought a 1990 Taurus, which still looked like the 1986 model, but it had an airbag. Funny, I was only 9 when the first Taurus was introduced, but I faintly remember the commercial on TV.... it was something like "Taurus, now you have driven the car you have been waiting for - Taurus- Taurus, Taurus- have your driven a Forrrrrrrd, lately?!
Here is a 1986-91 Taurus (1st generation)
