Between Mercury shutting down and Cadillac doing great with their luxury performance image, Lincoln really needs to start doing more. With Ford coming back with the 5.0, Lincoln needs to use it a bunch too. Lincoln should also come out with a coupe maybe even a two seater that can come as a convertible too. I love Corvettes, but I'd like to see what Ford could do with a luxury two seater.

well the could make a luxury car based of the new maustang platform maybe like the MKR use the motor from the GT500 and make it run with the CTS-V caddy and they would have a decent car

But should Lincoln go for the midlevel luxuary (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, and now Buick) or should it shoot higher (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Caddy). If all Lincoln is going to be is upscale rebaded Fords, they'll never reach the higher level. The turbo engines are a good idea for helping to meet fuel economy standards while maintaining the need for speed. I do like the new styling of Lincoln MKS and MKZ but give the cars a name instead of letters. But you're paying a higher dollar amount for some extra styling and tech dropped into a Ford Fusion and Ford Taurus.

I disagree. Coupes & high-performance sports cars are money losing propositions. It's great to have halo cars for marketing & PR, but if Lincoln is going to survive it needs to compete at the bread-and-butter level, which means near-luxury sedans priced under $45k. Their MKZ and MKS are simply uncompetitive and overpriced and being outclassed by even lowly Hyundai's offerings. Lincoln needs to step up their game seriously.

That reminds me when they first came out with the Mercury Cougar. Checked it out and they had made it slightly longer and wider wheelbase than the Mustang it was based on.

You've got your brands mixed up badly.

Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Audi - luxury brands.

Acura, Infiniti, Caddy - near-luxury.

Buick - nowhere close.

I digress.

Ultra-luxury brands: Bentley, Rolls Royce, Maybach, Maserati

Main-stream luxury brands: Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, Audi

Near-luxury- Lincoln, Acura, Infiniti, Buick

Agree. Except for -

Buick. It simply doesn't have the brand recognition, nor the established quality, nor the cachet to be included with those brands.

Cadillac - They have the brand history, but such a pathetic recent history that they need a few more years of producing at least decent cars. Also, I wouldn't put them in the class as the others simply because they don't have a viable flagship sedan.

Quality? Buick was at the top, surpassing Lexus, as JD Power and Associates best brand for quality and reliability. And it has brand recognition...just as being more toward an older segment than a younger one. This is changing with the Lacrosse and Buick's new design cues.

Lincoln will need to move up to real luxuary levels because Ford is offering some models at Lincoln levels according to this Motor Trend article. The Blue Oval Moves Upmarket - Motor Trend
Here's some quotes from the article,
[LEFT]It's easy to spend Lincoln money on a Ford these days. And we're not just talking about the Shelby GT500. The Taurus SHO, with Ford's premium 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, starts at $38,545 and quickly reaches Lincoln MKS territory, though the EcoBoost MKS base price is some 10-large higher than the SHO. The top of seven trim levels for the F-150 is the Platinum edition, designed to take the place of the failed Lincoln Mk LT pickup. The F-150 Platinum was originally designed to be a new Lincoln pickup, until Ford decided not to make an extra truck grille.

Now comes the 2011 Ford Flex Titanium, a special package on top of the erstwhile high-end Limited trim level. It revives the early '00's word "bling."

[LEFT]The Titanium starts at $41,115, more than $11k higher than a base Flex. The EcoBoost Titanium starts at $45,960, higher than the Lincoln MKT base price, but below the EcoBoost MKT's $49,975. One Web site went to the Ford Flex configurator and loaded the Titanium up to $54,491.

Amateurs. We threw everything on to the Flex Titanium and came up with an MSRP of $57,074, or $1021 per month with $5559 down, at 7-percent over 60 months. That's still short of a loaded MKT EcoBoost's $61,782, but not by much. What's going on, here?
