For those of you who have lived in Fort Collins, do you think the area is the "promised land?"

I think it depends on what your "promised land" looks like. Fort Collins is a great town and I miss living there, but I also think there are many communities out there that are similar. I do contemplate moving back there often though....

Wouldn't that greatly depend upon what you thought was being promised?

It is a great town, but I would imagine it is not for everyone.

I have left here a couple of times since originally moving here in 1972, but I keep coming back. Having moved to Summit County, Colorado (Keystone) twice, and to Roseville, California (Sacramento area) once, I felt like Fort Collins was better for me each time.

We travel quite a bit and I try to imagine living in each place we visit. For the things I enjoy and the quality of life for our family, Fort Collins seems to be the best match.

What does your "Promised Land" look like?

Fort Collins is no promised land. The town has a Mayberry feel to it which is a huge plus for many who live here. Even with the budget cuts it seems the City of Fort Collins does an amazing job at maintaining pleasant streetscapes throughout. Sure, there is still grafitti, crime, and drugs, but overall its a very nice place. There is tons of outdoor recreation, increasing the quality of life exponentially.

The weather is very nice in terms of warm days and cool nights. The weather hasn't stayed too hot or too cool for very long since I've been here.

On the flip side I find customer service in Fort Collins to be severely lacking. Many people in customer service are college students or younger people who seem to carry around an attitude that they're doing you, the customer, a favor by merely existing. I think many of these people think they're too good to serve you.

I think drivers here are laughably aggressive for a city of this size. I hear car horns wailing on a daily basis from my apartment, more than I ever heard in Las Vegas, which is about the size of Denver. I seem to get cut off constantly even though I travel above the speed limit and red light running is a serious issue here. All of these complaints may just be the driving habits of CSU students. Who knows?

The mall here is a disgrace. I can't understand why a city that has so much civic pride has such a disastrous mall. Half of the stores are closed, the mall is horribly outdated in terms of look, and is pretty much a ghost town.

Other than those three minor complaints, I can't say too many negative things about Fort Collins!

Not as bad as many other cities. I used to travel to Lubbock TX a lot and everyone used to brag about how good the restaurant service was because of the big "hospotality industry" degree program at Texas Tech. My feeling toward the level of service in restaurants and hotels was that if that's what they're teaching for "service" at the college level then it's too bad the wait staff jobs can't be outsourced to the people in India that are pissing off so many cell phone customers.

Where I live in Bend, Oregon has a similar feel, although it's smaller and has been hit harder in terms of the economy. I've heard Corvallis, OR compared to Ft. Fun, with the exception of the weather. Missoula, MT reminds me a bit of Fort Collins as well, although again, the weather in the winter is a lot harsher.

I think many university towns are going to have a similar feel to Ft. Collins. With that, you might want to narrow down what's important to you to help you find your "promised land."
