Hey all, I've been to ft collins a few time but not really long enough to get a great feel for it. Hopeing to get some help with a few questions.

Whats the general vibe there? Happy?

Are alot of people moving to the area and changing the feel?

Is there a good amount of conscious people in the area? IE. "green", organic, "hippie" (man i hate using the word) types.

Can you find say 5 or so acres within a 45 min commute for a decent price?

Artist community??

Are there some alternative docs around? ND's?

Good place to raise a family??

Easy access to outdoor stuff, biking, hiking etc.?

Oh I have lived in places like Asheville, Missoula Mt, Eugene OR. Just to give you an idea of the sort of places I like.

Thanks everyone.

Great access to outdoor stuff like cycling (road and mountain), hiking, fishing, kayaking, rafting, camping, etc. Winter sports are a bit more difficult, but not bad. Snowshoeing and XC skiing are about an hour or less. Resorts for skiing and snowboarding are about 2+ hours away.

Fort Collins is a great place to raise a family, and has recently been rated as such by National Geographic Adventure magazine. The school district is consistently rated highly, as well.

The arts community as good, and you will find an even larger arts community in neighboring Loveland, just to our south. A couple of resources: Downtown Arts District and Beet Street.

Acreage near town is available, but your definition of decent price may vary, depending upon where you are coming from. I am showing about 30 properties available between $30k and $300k currently available in the MLS. Most of these are within 45 minutes of town, as long as the roads are decent. The more mountainous properties will be in the Red Feather Lakes area, and the closer acreages will likely be north and north-east of town on the prairie.

The green community is alive and well here. CSU has been instrumental in advancing clean energy programs and industry. The just completed Sustainable Living Fair grows annually. The local food co-op and the bicycle co-op also have many like-minded individuals.

Fort Collins is still growing, so there must be some reason. We consistently receive recognition in national media as a great place to live. Most of the people are happy to be here. There are some employment issues and you will find some unhappy folks, but for the most part, we are a laid back, happy town.

Good luck with your possible move.

Thanks Mike, great info. Our price range probably 200-220k. We would like 5 acres or more.. No fancy house just a house, no trailers etc. Is that reasonable?? Thanks again.

Sorry for the tardy reply. I've been showing homes to lots of buyers the past few days.
I currently show 8 properties in the MLS that are on 4-9 acres and are roughly 45 - 60 minutes from town.

I lived for a while in Ft. Collins. What I loved the most were the beautiful hardwood trees, varieties unusual to Colorado. Cache La Poudre River Canyon is one of the most beautiful outdoor spots possible with hiking & camping. With it's tree-lined streets & great schools, IMHO it would be an ideal city in which to raise children. The college influence brings with it the green/organic/liberal views to which you allude. To me the general feel to Ft. Collins is prize-winning US city.
