Hi All,

I am new to the forum. I am looking to move for a job that is located at the Hard rock hotel and casino in Florida. I have never been to the area before and wanted to know the best places to look into moving near there. I am only looking to spend approx 800-950 a month on rent. Alot of people on these forums are saying its expensive to live in south florida? I live in the East Coast and the understanding to all of us is it is mad cheap to live in FL...

Anyway, any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. So far I am looking into Hollywood Hills, Aventura, Weston...possibily Fort Lauderdale. Again, above all I want a safe area but I am also looking to be able to meet other people as I would be moving down there by myself and looking to meet friendly people and build new group of friends.

Thank you for all responses.

At least as far as S. Florida is concerned you are quite wrong. Well, you can find a cheap place - of course if personal safety is any concern, you may not be interested in them.

I would say Aventura, Weston, and the nicer places in Ft. Lauderdale would probably be out of your price range.

Given where you are working you may want to check the area around Nova University. It's only a few minutes away from the Hard Rock, and there are a bunch of apartment complexes there. A good portion of the people living there are college students, which can be a plus or minus depending on your lifestyle. It's not like living in one of the downtown areas as far as excitement, but at least it is a relatively safe area.

In that price range it may not be easy but you might wish to try Davie, Plantation, Sunrise any possibly Cooper City, and all west of University Drive.

Where on the East Coast do you live? Do you realize FL is on the East Coast too? Which part of FL is it "mad cheap" to live in? And what is your definition of "mad cheap"? We hear this a lot from people up north who've never lived here. It was cheap in the 60's, but no longer. South FL is considered expensive by most, but is cheaper than NYC or California. There are many other parts of FL that are considerably cheaper, but you asked specifically about South FL, so lets limit our discussion to this area.

Your proposed budget won't get you much here. Certainly not somewhere "safe". Most decent areas to live around here you're gonna pay at least $1000/mo for rent minimum for the cheapest 1BR unit. And hardly any places include utilities, cable tv, or internet. I would recommend finding a realtor and telling them your budget you can afford.

Hollywood has a lot of Cheap - Low rent Neighborhoods. I would suggest looking in Pembroke Pines, Which is only 8-10 miles from the Casino. Most P.P communities are gated and some have 24 hour security on the premises. Rent is around 800 to 1200 depending on the amenities. One benefit of Hollywood is that it is closer to the ocean front.

Excuse me Nolefan34, but it seems as though you take offense, and respond in a most sarcastic manner. I don't believe anyone here seeking advice needs a Geography lesson, and understands that usually when one refers to east coast, it's usually Northeast, such as NY, NJ, PA, and CT. In another reply to a post you remarked in a negative manner when one is seeking affordable housing in safe area, and your response was very snide.
I truly would like to know where you live that is so safe. I know you are probably in a gated community, and probably have money, so its easy for you to be a Judge and Jury and render verdicts and disapproval of certain neighborhoods that don't meet your qualifications of safety. Well, will tell you about the latest in NEWS.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SAFE AREA'S, NO MATTER YOUR PRICE RANGE. The World is out of control, the USA is being flushed down the toilet, there will be no money for the elderly to live off of, and all the wealthy people will be targets of crime because the message that is being spread by politicians that the super rich are not sharing, so those that cant comprehend, and with out immigration and open border policies, the streets wont be safe for anyone, especially the wealthy, and don't think you are any safer living in a gated community. Anyone can hop a fence, especially if they want to burglarize or break into a home for a robbery.

Are you the same poster who wanted to live in a "white area"? And went on and on about how white areas are safer than others? If so, I would suggest refraining from attacking someone for being judgmental about what areas are safe. Or at least change your screen name before doing so. You say I am negative, yet proceed to bash the U.S., saying its going down the toilet. Gee you are so optimistic.

I was being brutally honest towards the other poster. Not snide or sarcastic. He said Florida is "mad cheap" and gave a low budget. I told him the truth, that South FL is not mad cheap, and he will have a difficult time finding something most considered "safe" with that budget. I wanted to know where the poster is from so I can give him a cost of living comparison. When someone says East Coast, it is not usually considered the North East. Big difference. East Coast can mean anywhere up and down the coast including Florida.

I do not live in a gated community, but have friends who are currently in the same position as the other poster, and they are having lots of difficulty finding anything under $1000 anywhere in Broward County that is not a rough neighborhood.

You were told wrong. South Florida is not cheap---by any definition. Your rental budget is not going to get you anything in areas like Aventura or Weston. You need to come up to about $1400 to $1500 to get a nice place in a decent area. Mind you, much of this area is turning ghetto, but some of the ghetto areas here are really not that bad. By this I mean that they may not be so great to live in, but they're no more 'unsafe' than much of the rest of south Florida.

Nolefan34, I don't need to change my screen name, because whatever I am stating is the truth, especially about you being very judgmental, sarcastic, and possibly offended because someone has stated that Florida is dirt cheap. You must admit that the way you responded "Do you realize Florida is on the East coast too" was a bit snide, crude and disrespectful?
I had stated when I was researching about buying a home, that I want a predominantly white neighborhood, because the facts are that those area's are less crime ridden, less drug dealers, less likely bullets flying around wildly, and definitely safer when one Jogs in the early morning or night, to at least return home safely without a knife in your back, or raped.
You must understand that many people are searching and seeking advice on this thread, possibly making the biggest decisions of their lives, and seek out info from individuals who are hopefully sincere. You have criticized numerous area's and labeled them as unsafe, possibly discouraging people to look elsewhere, creating more of a ghetto effect and preventing people to move to neighborhoods that could possibly be balanced out by other individuals moving in who are non violent, non criminal people who wish to stabilize a area, an with people like you responding there is no hope for certain area's. I am from NY, and there has been many neighborhoods that were taken back, and now most people cant afford to live there.
I have moved to Florida in spite of your suggestions, rented for 6 months, and realized a lot of neighborhoods that you said stay away from, very sketchy and sleazy people, that it wasn't so. You said stay away from all area's East of 95, which is ridiculous. Oakland Pk, I can see runs hot and cold. But yet there are blocks where the houses are changing all for the better. My Friend bought there 4 years ago for 85,000 and now sold his house in 3 days for 329,000. Tamarac, Margate, Coconut Creek are all very nice, an of course there are pockets that one has to be concerned about.
I liked Florida so much that I bought a home in Lauderdale-by-the-sea, and one in Boca. I have Family that definitely want to move down here because to them its dirt cheap, compared to NY, and they need to buy a home with a strict budget, and my Sister bought a charming home in Tamarac, as well as my cousin.
I have had enough of NY, wanted to move down to Florida, and definitely wanted to live in a White neighborhood, because of safety concerns, and am sure you are living in one as well. There are still neighborhoods that are safe, economic, and have people of color living there. I have no problem living with people of color, its just that I choose to be in a predominantly white area, balanced off with Asians,Latin, Black, and any other color race, or creed. But it is not my fault that when you see area's that are predominantly Black or Hispanic that those area's are usually crime ridden area's with extreme violence, crime, rape, burglary, and robbery. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO BE SUBJECTED TO SUCH LIVING CONDITIONS AND LIFESTYLE, NO MATTER WHAT COLOR, RACE, OR CREED.

SO don't get your balls all twisted in a knot, and chill, at least I got you to respond, and it gave you something to do, bye, bye Sweetie
