Hi i was wondering if any retirees in the area can give me any info on life in South Florida for a military retiree? Are there any commissaries or exchange near? How is medical in the area? What are good areas to move to? Is the Stuart area too far of a commute?

I accepted a couple of assignments working with the military & there is also a small commissary on SouthCom in Doral, FL which is north of Homestead and closer to Hollywood. However, for serious shopping, to a person they told me that they would travel up to Patrick AFB in Melbourne--about 2 1/2 hours from Hollywood.

There are two VA hospitals in the area--downtown Miami and West Palm Beach. Hope this helps.

Hollywood Florida is a really nice area to move too. It's a smaller more family orientated town with a beautiful beach boardwalk. My wife and I love going there in the weekends, go to the beach, get something to eat, and enjoy the ocean.

To commute from Hollywood FL, to Stuart FL would take you approximately 1.5 hours, if traffic is descent.... but 95 is not really known for having good traffic . Would not be a good commute unfortunately.

As for the military commissaries and exchanges, the closest to Hollywood would be Homestead Exchange, which is about 50 miles south of Hollywood and would probably take you an hour or so to get there.

I hope this helps
Best,
Marc
Thank you Marc for the information! How is the traffic on the turnpike? I will definitely look into the Homestead base. I believe they only have a small store.

Thank you Wizrap! I will look into the one on SouthCom. Its nice to know people travel to Patrick, I wondered if it would be a crazy idea but i see not too crazy . The Hospitals sound close we drive over an hour now.
