Hi all,
My stepson just arrived in Ft. Lauderdale and is in a hostel. Can someone give me an idea where he can look for a cheap but a little more private place to stay? Areas he is interested in is Sunrise, Weston, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines. Preferably 500 to 700 a month. Any of those areas he should stay away from? Thanks!

Default cheap housing

I haven't been here too long, but I've heard that some times 'crew houses' are cheap. Try googling 'crew housing in fort lauderdale'. I don't know much about them except they are usually rented by the week. $500-$700 a month is going to be tough to find in a safe area.

Other posters here will be happy to advise you of the safest areas and where to stear clear of. I'm sure this topic has been posted many times in previous threads. Do a search, I'm sure you'll find answers to your questions.
Good luck.

Out of all of those, the only place you are likely to find ANYTHING is in Hollywood, and it will be a marginal studio apartment (maybe a 1 bedroom) in an unsafe neighborhood. I have a friend who got really lucky and found a shabby, but livable building to stay in for 775 a month on the good side of Hollywood. That is the best I have seen anyone do down here. If you increase to 800 a month, you might be able to find more places in Sunrise or Pembroke Pines, generally on the marginal sides of these cities. Forget about Weston.

An area you might be able to find affordable/safe basic apartments in the 750/month range is Coral Springs and Tamarac. Stay west in the latter, which is old people central, but safe. East is robbery central.

I think your son may enjoy Hollywood more, but the area is a hit and miss regarding good areas. The 441 corridor is depressed, but the downtown core area is up-and-coming. The 1-95 corridor....avoid completely.

There are some older apartments in eastern Pembroke Pines, however few. Even over here in Cooper City (yawn) off 90th ave and just west of 90th ave. Old quad-plexes, but probably cost more that $700.

Weston is fine, Pembroke is good but these are more for the older set.
Actually , Hollywood, in the Jefferson St. area off Harrison is fantastic. My son lives there and in the complex called the Jefferson there is covered parking and rents are about 750 and 900 for a 1 and 2 bedroom respectively. It is a condo so renters have to be approved. You can walk to the groovy Harrison Street area.

Weston and Pembroke Pines are for the older set? I don't think so. Sunrise and Tamarac are for the older set. Pines has some elderly communities but is mostly young families. Weston is almost exclusively a family community.

$500-$700 per month is not happening in either community though.
