Hello,

I am looking for definitive laws regarding use of Bikes / Motorized Bikes (electric), Scooters (with and without pedals) and Scooters (gas powered less than 50cc) on Sidewalks in the Estero area.

My main route for travel would be on the section on Estero Parkway to Tree Oaks and or Ben Griffin roads.

Rationale for me asking is that I am hearing too many conflicting stories as far as what can and can not be done.

In addition are these types of transportation safe? And are they easily stolen?

My thanks in advance.

If you don't want conflicting stories about a legal matter, this probably isn't the best place to ask. I'd ask the police.

NoSnow,

Your comment is valid. Since I am not in Paradise until fall, I was hoping someone already went to the police and gathered the facts.

I have a small foldable bike my husband turned into an electric bike. I try and peddle when i am on sidewalks with pedestrians, but use the throttle a bit when on the bike/walk paths. When I want to get somewhere fast, ( my bike can go up to 35 miles an hour) I keep it on the road, but try and use less populated roads to get where I am going.

If they have to be licensed/registered, call the Lee County Tax Collector and ask them. They deal with road laws, drivers license, registration, tickets...etc.

Or google Lee County Sheriff and call them.

Are they safe? On 41? Hell no. On Ben C? Nope. On Three oaks? Nada. On community streets ( say your gated community) yes, they are safe.

Are they stolen? sure they are. They are easy enough to pick up and throw in the back of the truck.

I believe that motorized vehicles are not allowed on sidewalks. But, you can find out for sure by calling the Tax Office or Lee County Sheriff.

The general rule is that if it is not human propelled, it must be on the street, not the sidewalk. Would I ever ride a motorized bike on the street ? NEVER ! You are asking to be killed IMO. I see people driving those whimpy little motor bikes and cars swerving to miss them all the time.
