How have the lines been to pick up rental cars at the airport? I flew into Tampa late April and it was brutal. Thanks!

When I was in Fort Myers in April, the lines were bad (granted, it was around the Easter holiday). If you want to skip the lines and your rental car company has a rewards program that auto assigns a car for you, I highly recommend that. Hertz, National, Alamo, Budget, and Avis all have some version of this. Others may as well.

I went on a week day for pick up and then drop off a week later on a weekday as well back in Late September. Very few people in line and the car pick up process was pretty simple. Its close from the airport doors to the car rental doors and then you have lots of cars to choose from most days. We used Thrifty as it was much cheaper than others and booked through Hotwire.com

I rented a car at RSW on Wednesday. There was no line at Avis/Budget grouping. I had the car and was out in 5 minutes. Got a great rate through Costco Travel.

This isn't necessarily unique to RSW or Florida. I had a former co-worker fly to St. Louis on business and Avis had no cars despite her having a reservation and her company having a corporate account with the rental provider.

It doesn't help that the manufactures can barely keep up with consumer demand let alone fleet demand. And when Hertz sells 1/3 of their fleet in 2020 just to stay afloat, the constraints are huge with demand surging back faster than supply. Hertz has an average daily rate of $114 nationally as of November, if I recall a recent article correctly. Supply and demand for sure.
