I know in this area mileage does not equal commute time. Is it possible to live near Frederick and commute to Baltimore? Does anyone do it and how long is your drive?

Thank you

Be prepared for traffic. There will be plenty of other commuters coming towards Baltimore from I-70. And if you'll be working downtown, you'll most likely have to deal with beltway traffic, too.

What about the opposite?

I currently live in Baltimore and might be getting a job in Frederick. Since its the opposite way everyone travels, I don't think the commute will be too bad, but I'm guessing no commuter buses or the like exist between the two, right?

Default Frederick, D.C.

It should be a bit easier, particularly after some of the Columbia/D.C. traffic siphons off at 29. But Frederick is a growth county now firmly in the orbit as a suburb of Washington, D.C., so the volume keeps increasing steadily as more suburban schlock is being built.
As to commuter bus to Baltimore, I believe the answer is negatory. Whatever public commuter service exists services the I-270 corridor and Washington. Ahhh, but there is a way. Theoretically, one could commute to Baltimore by train from MARC's Frederick station to Union Station to Baltimore, but it is a nightmare scenario that even sadomasochists avoid.

Still no commuter bus, and the Marc to Baltimore via Washington idea is a non-starter ... that's a 3 hour commute each way.

Sometimes we visit my in-laws in Frederick County during the week and spend the night. We get on I-70 very early in the morning to avoid traffic. It flows very well before 7:30 a.m. until a few miles before the Patpasco River and I-695, where both lanes grind to a halt ... even if you're not exiting at 695. To get to my job in Woodlawn, I have to get off at U.S. 29, head south to U.S. 40 and cross the Patapsco into Baltimore County that way.

With no traffic, it's not a bad drive. I'd hate to do it every day, but admittedly I have a low tolerance for commuting. Also keep in mind that I-70 backs up siginificantly on and around holiday weekends. I'd still rather drive I-70 than I-695 on any day of the week.
