I haven't bought any new clothes since about 2 years ago. I have a "fall & winter" denim jacket that I've been wearing for atleast 5 years. I've just recently replaced my shoes. I'm down to just two pairs of shoes and a set of sandals for around the house. I've never quite the trendy guy so I could careless about looking fashionable because I can't really afford it.

You folks that say clothes are a luxury, I can only assume you work from home, don't work or work in an environment where you can wear whatever you want (or a uniform).

No doubt. If you have a job that requires a uniform or if you have to dress a certain way, this isn't a luxury, it is a job requirement. These items can still be purchased on the used market and save you some bucks. Just don't fall into the trap that this job requirement means to go out a blow cash on over priced clothes that you don't really need. Most people have too many clothes that they don't really need and don't even have room to store. Do we really need walk in closets? Look at houses built 50, 60 or 75 years ago, the closets were real small. Most people could lose 60 percent of their clothes in their closets and still get by quite easily. The sad thing is that there are too many people who only have the clothes on their back that could really use these clothes... But that's another subject altogether.

What do you mean it's all crap? You don't like the current fashion?

Clothes are a necessity for sure.
Having your family look nice is very important. Not just in the workforce.
Clothes that I don't need,I give to a needy clothes bin.
I like to find new ideas and wear them. I have never needed a brand name though to be happy.
Having to "show" a name or "wear" a name to feel happy or impress someone just isn't me.
However, I do go into the brand name stores to shop also. I just don't put much importance to it
personally.

Why does it have to be either one?

Sometimes I need a new pair of shoes, or jeans or even a suit to replace something in my wardrobe. Sometimes I may splurge on a more expensive item of clothing which may be a bit of a "luxury"

But usually, if I buy a new article of clothing it is just because I like to do so from time to time. That's it - no pros vs. cons, no balancing necessity vs. luxury, no over-thinking it.
