I adore my nieces and nephew.

They are two 5 year olds and 1 year old. The 1 year old is easy to please but not the 5 year olds. The girls love Disney Princess toys, shoes, tiara's... anything princess and trendy at the moment. Frozen was their thing last year. Children are the best manipulators because I went over my Xmas shopping budget to get them their favorite Elsa dolls and Barbie dolls. Those toys are not cheap! Not only that, as kids do, they stopped playing with them after a month. Argh.

I am not a parent but an aunt who have trouble saying no. This year, they looked at me with big, doe eyes and asked if they could have a different Disney princess doll. Ouch, my wallet...

What to do? Where and when should I start looking for toys? What is the best toy for girls their age?

Get something within your budget or quit complaining.
Children can only manipulate the adults who allow the manipulation.

Disney on Ice sounds like a great idea. I'll have to look into this. Thanks.

If a toy is popular, you'd better start shopping for it right now.

For the boy, a new Star Wars movie is coming out. When my boy was a kid, he loved is toy X-Wing Fighter and toy Death Star. There will surely be some Star Wars related toys available, and they will probably be difficult to get your hands on, so start looking now.

Disney on Ice is probably more than $20/person, plus you have to get tickets for the adults to go too.

For the princess dolls, see if there's a Disney store near you. They almost always have the princesses on sale. Just don't take the kids with you, they'll end up begging for more things.

Also, the Mattel store website has specials pretty often...right now they've got some of the princess dolls on sale or clearance.

Princess costumes would probably be a big hit too. You might look at the clearance after Halloween at your local stores and see what kind of princess stuff is left over.

I know you want to be a fun aunt, but honestly, toys become overload. My kids would end up with so many they didn't know what to do with them all. They would just become something else to clean up.

I would suggest getting t-shirts, pajamas, socks, etc., in whatever princess theme. My kids loved stuff like that and it was practical. Also, you can have fun dressing in your favorite princess gear and having a pedicure or manicure to match the outfit. A simple pedicure is usually less than $20.
