Don't forget to check out dumpsters at apartment buildings, for things that have been discarded after being replaced by Christmas presents. Furniture, appliances, sometimes clothing, and even Christmas dinner leftovers.
i dont know about all that, but i bought a beautiful coat (with tags still on) for only $15 bucks off of craigslist . the girl didnt want it because it didnt fit her and i guess she couldnt return it
I stopped by to see a neighbor today, and his housekeeper told me that last year, she found a brand new set of towels, tags still on them, in a dumpster the day after Christmas. People get gifts they don't like, and just throw them away, rather than bother to take them back to the store. The dumpsters get so full from Christmas, that they overflow, and good stuff just gets set on the ground next to them.
Every moving day at the end of the month, there is furniture out next to the dumpster.

Go for it, it is the original "being green" recycling. I see nothing wrong w/ salvaging items, especially new items. It is just silly to think you shouldn't.
Here people put items on the berm, which is a way of saying Take it, it's free. Most of us put a little free sign in front. I am always happy to do this, and I truly enjoy when someone pulls up, and is clearly excited to retrieve something they want/need.
I knew of family friends whose cat had fleas and slept all over their furniture. They got rid of the furniture (it was old anyways and they getting to move) by putting it on the curb for garbage. People stopped and took it. All I could think was ick! with all those fleas that were probably still in tehe furniture.
couple weeks ago I looked out the window and saw someone putting a blood (or some other dark stained) mattress in the dumpster (I asked my husband if there had been a murder in the complex). Someone took it less than an hour later.... Me, I'd would have rather slept on a concrete floor than that mattress but to each his own , I guess.
We'll be making a trip or two to the Goodwill to drop some things off. I've found that Jan is a good time to take a look around thrift stores.
