Last year we visited Vollmer Farm in both spring and fall, and got our halloween jack o lantern pumpkins there in the fall. We also found these really cool gourds labeled "Snake Gourds" that looked kinda scary. We were having a halloween party and happened to find 2 that looked like our initials of our last names for the front porch (really, very cool).
Then I threw them all (snakes and pumpkins) on our compost pile along with all sorts of other goodies, winter went by, and spring came. Well, I must not've been turning that compost enough because lo and behold, we now have vines taking over and I am pretty sure we have snake gourds and pumpkins back there!!!!
Here's the thing--I don't know how to grow these things. I did some googling and found something about hand pollinating the things (we're not getting much in the way of actual gourds). Also, I wondered if there's a way to "Train" the gourds to grow in specific letter shapes. Sure would be cool to get more initials!!!
