Long a symbol of the unattainable, blue roses will be for sale this fall in the United States and Canada.
Named “Applause,” the rose is genetically modified to synthesize delphinidin, a pigment found in most blue flowers. The rose was first released in in Tokyo in 2009, after 20 years of research by Suntory, a Japanese company that also distills whisky, and its Australian subsidiary, Florigene (now Suntory Flowers).
Several years ago I planted a "blue rose" in my garden it was called a sterling silver rose. It didn't make it despite being sold here in my garden center, that said. it looked almost identical to this one.
I agree it was a bit disappointing and it looks like there still aren't any true blue roses out there- judging by the pictures I've seen so far. The blue roses you can get at the florist are dyed white roses. I've never seen real blue roses for sale as plants/shrubs. I even spent some time checking all the major nurseries that sell roses and haven't found anything remotely blue. Can someone find a link to one of those roses that have been around that really look blue? I'm really curious why this one is considered "the first" if there have been others.
