I have many lovely spreading yews Tina. Let me introduce you to them. They have a lovely ferny quality and are tough as nails.

You are right about a severe prune may kill of a juniper, if that is what it is. Yews and Junipers both do not, however, spread via underground methods that I have ever seen or even read about from reliable sources.
