Garden experts,

We are very new to Dahlias so we have no idea what's going on? Buds are becoming brownish in a pattern (see pic) and also stem is becoming brownish too. Leaves look OK. Is it too much of sun? Too much water? Or something else? Or is it normal?

Thanks

Alpha,
I must need glasses, because I don't see anything wrong with them.

are they blooming OK? is the stem rotting before it blooms? if so I think it is too much water or poor drainage.

Butterfly - see below

no kudzu - They haven't started blooming yet. What worries me is that I planted exact same type of Dahlia in a row and out of that 3 are like this (brownish) while the two are perfect green and look fantastic. I sort of thought it's because of too much of water (has been rainy for a while).

In looking at your pictures I am having a hard time seeing anything to worry about. What exactly looks "wrong" to you? The splotchy colors are well within normal except for competition dahlias and happen quite often with the darker colors. The pointed bud is somewhat unusual but still doesn't appear diseased or like there is a problem. Most types of dahlias begin with a rounded bud but some have a slightly more pointed tip as they begin to open.

The amount of rain would effect all of the dahlias equally and does not look like it has created any issues. Leave them alone and let them bloom and see what they look like once they do so.

what worries me is brownish stem for 3 of them as in pic 1 while others have it perfectly green. They are supposed to be identical unless they put different kind of tubers in one bag.

For the time being I am leaving them alone and report back where it goes.

I would heed J&Em's advice. She is usually spot on with her take on these things, and I happen to agree with her. Your dahlias look absolutely fine.

be sure to post pictures once they bloom which shouldn't be too far away.

I've grown dahlias many times and I don't see anything wrong. They look like they will be burgandy colored flowers and the stems will partially turn that color as well sometimes.
