I have them in my new backyard, which is filled with flowers, plants, bushes, trees. When I first saw one, I thought it was a marble. But turning it over, it's slimy, and a living "thing" is in there.

Are they good, bad or nothing to worry about? The neighbor said to put it back where I found it. So I did.

Are they eating my plants or roots? So far, I do not see any damage (yet). Should I spray something? Am leery to do this, because I have pets. What to do??

They love beer (IPA style).
Beer (aldehydes in the yeast and hops, harmless to humans) tends to poison them.

Snails, often called escargots, eat some vegetation, but they're harmless. Snails and snail eggs are considered delicacies in European countries. Snail eggs are known as snail caviar.

The humane way to cook snails is to place them in cool water and slowly heat it. They'll quickly lose consciousness.

Hi Phx Barb -- I've been off here for a while and get back on, and lo and behold, you have finally moved! Congratulations! Nice to hear you have moved to Prescott, a much nicer climate. Now about those slugs - nasty things! I have had no trouble with them at either of my Glendale homes, but my mother had them in her Sun City garden. And the suggested remedy has already been given - BEER! That is the exact thing Mom was told too. With the price of beer these days, it is kind of an expensive remedy!! But it doesn't hurt to try. -- HollyhockGarden

They are called SLUGS in the garden and as previously suggested beer or diatomaceous earth which will dehydrate them.

A slug is not a snail even though they are related. Snails can be very bad for the garden, especially exotic snails that started out in someone's aquarium but were dumped outside. They are not toxic but they will injure your plants. Best to get rid of them as best you can. Snails and Slugs Management Guidelines--UC IPM

I'm thinking you should melt some butter and cook those suckers. :-)

Apart from beer, try using crushed egg shells sprinkled around the plants to keep away snails from harming the greens altogether. Snails have soft bodies and the egg shells will not particularly feel comfortable to the touch; plus, they are a good source of calcium for your plants too. Kill two birds with one stone this way.

Are you seeing plant damage?

No? Then why start killing things?
