I tried a search before posting this question, and couldn't find an answer..so I apologize in advance if I am repeating.
Anyhow, usually I buy 8 hanging baskets per season. I usually buy petunias as I love the different colors. My problem is, they always start getting scraggly looking. The stems and leaves start getting brown. I water them appropriately, give them food etc., We get alot of sun and I am wondering if perhaps there is too much sun. Would there be another more hardy plant I could use? This will be for my house back in the New England area.
My feeling is they are not getting enough water. It is very hard to keep planters wet during the heat of summer. Also petunias may get scraggly and need to be cut back. I think they like as much sun as possible, but if you did move them to a more sheltered spot they would not dry out as fast.

Petunias make lovely hanging baskets but they need to be pinched back routinely to give a bushier plant. Geraniums are not usually used in hanging baskets as you want something trailing. I use Wandering Jew, Asparagus Ferns, Airplane Plant, Sweet Potato Vine, Verbena and others. There are lots of wonderful sites for suggestions on how to pick the right plants for hanging baskets but I don't know of anything which would be perennial in New England. It would have to be brought in when the weather gets cold. Oh- maybe you just mean "hardy" as in healthy and not cold hardy?
No Kudzu is right Keep cutting back your container plants. Regular haircuts keep them looking great. They may have that new-haircut look for a few days, but you'll be glad you took a shears to them.
What about Million Bells - they look like tiny petunias, I don't think they have any smell, colors bright and beautiful, and you don't need to deadhead them. They are annuals and like full sun. I have had some great luck with them.
I have found that geraniums don't do well in hanging baskets. I have one now that my MIL gave me, it flowered beautifully when I first got it but has never flowered again and it's in full sun all day. Dead headed, haircut, etc. Even Miracle-Gro doesn't help.
