I have been fighting the battle of ants invading my outdoor pots for years. I have heard about soaking the pots in water but I have a few plants in giant planters that make it nearly impossible. Any success stories?
Diatomaceous earth works great on ants, but I have to ask, since ants do no harm to plants, why are you so concerned about getting rid of them? I never kill ants outside, just in the house.
I am normally fighting fire ants ( I live in Houston) and share no love for the critter. They are my nemesis.
Ahhhh, fire ants! Now that I can understand. Can you find their hill and treat it? Diatomaceous earth isn't the kind of ant killer that ants take back to the nest. It kills the ones that ingest it.
If I just had non stinging ants, I would not kill them. I'm not sure what harm they do?
I have had fire ants in a few big pots, so I dump some of the same stuff that we use on the lawn into these pots, and so long you little suckers.

Ants "herd" aphids. They bite their wings off and secrete chemicals to slow them down and prevent them from growing wings. The aphids then suck sap from the plants and excrete honeydew which the ants consume. The ants keep them in one place so they can farm them for honeydew. They will also fight off predators like ladybugs to protect the aphids.
