We live in a rural area and the deer seem to thrive on the expensive plants I provide them. Is there a good way to "discourage" these nighttime prowlers from making my yard colorless? Any ideas?
You can buy or make really stinky stuff to spray on your plants, which actually works pretty well. It's usually some combination of old blood and rotten eggs. Thankfully, deer have much more sensitive noses than people do, so the amount needed to repel them is barely detectable to humans. Some people have decent success with plain blood meal, which is a good fertilizer.
You can google for lists of deer-resistant plants for your area.
None of these methods works 100% of the time. A hungry deer is a determined deer.
We know someone that swears by human urine. around the plants. We havent found that to be effective though. We have watched deer run when they have been blasted by water from a motion activated sprinkler - they have them at hardware stores. Unfortunately the sprinklers blast everyone that triggers them. That can be a nuisance. Now we have a 7 foot high deer fence that seems to work the best...we do feel a bit like we are in prison though when we are in the garden!
I haven't tried this yet, but I'm going to as my son's girlfriend swears by it. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and just a drop or two of dawn dish detergent. Dice a habanero pepper and put in bottle and allow to sit over night. Spray the flowers and the deer and other animals will stay away. If it rains, just re-spray. I don't have flowers blooming yet, but I definitely will try it.
Just don't hurt the deers and you are good. Why not get a fence?
