Gardening newbie here. My yard is primarily orange day-lilies and I would like to add some more color. I see a lot of gardeners having events where you can come and dig out a plant, or someone is moving and you can come pick something from the garden.

Their prices are pretty cheap but what is the likelihood of the plant surviving? Are some more sensitive than others? I always hear about not splitting or moving things until spring so I was surprised to see so many people trying to give away plants. I'm in zone 6. Thanks for any advice!

This isn't the best time to dig up and transplant, but if you do your due diligence on keeping it watered, and happy it will be okay. You may not have the perfect plant this year, but if you take care of it you will be quite rewarded in the next growing cycle. Think landscapers, they plant all summer long, while letting their customers know what needs to be done to keep those plants thriving.
