I can get an OEM [B.B. (or Panasonic?)] rated at 18AH or spend half as much and get a UPG rated at 22AH.

My OEM battery lasted five years but I have heard some of the generic replacements last only two.

Swapping out looks pretty easy.

I cannot help you on your problem; but I did want to complain about these batteries. I had an expensive Makita screw gun with two 14.4 volt batteries that died. The screw gun was over $200; but the new batteries would have cost me about $140. Then I would still have had the 'old' system with the NI-MH batteries instead of the newer lithium ion batteries + it would not be the higher voltage of the newer drills. I ended up scrapping the Makita and buying a Ridgid, on sale, 18 volt lithium screw gun and also their impact driver for less than I paid for the Makita + I qualified for their 'free battery replacement for life' guarantee.

Unfortunately these companies perpetually upgrade and leave us holding equipment that is no longer practical to maintain.

Ryobi uses the same generic cases for all its batteries.. I bought a new Ryobi with the new lithium batteries and new style charger which also charges my old battieries when I thought they were beyond repair..

Gave up on mower after other issues and got an EGO mower. So much lighter and more maneuverable than my old lead acid battery B&D. It even folds up and can be stored vertically plus can do a full recharge in 30 minutes. Just like Tesla the new electric mowers aren't like you dad's GM EV1!
