It is growing some kind of nuts. The leaves don't look like oak leaves.

I was going to say some type of Ash but with the nuts forming I am going with some type of Hickory. Maybe Bitternut Hickory?

That looks like it, thanks!

Would the wood be good for smoking meat?

Mmmmm! I think any type of Hickory wood (or is it would? ). You can google it, I'm not sure. Curious though so post back. Good for firewood if you don't use it to cook with

The tree needs trimming so I am going to keep the wood.

Why do you think the tree needs trimming? It's just getting started.

(Sing along. You know the tune--it's from Frozen.)

Let it grow, let it grow
You'll have much more to show
Let it grow, let it grow
It's nature's way you know

One small tree...
...that's reaching for the sky
Please just let it grow!

The cold never bothered me anyway!
(oops, wrong lyrics)

That's a pretty young hickory, I wouldn't trim it or cut and cure it for firewood if it were me. The nuts might or might not be edible, depending on the variety. Pretty hard to tell enough from the photo.

you use the nuts for adding flavor to charcoaling -- just throw 2 or 3 on a bed of hot charcoal and then grill your meat
