Even a small plastic container of liriope costs $7 (before tax) in home depot, I need quite many for a small area of steep surface ground cover, I guess it will cost me around $200.
But I also have quite some mature liriope, can I break each of them into multiple pieces. One mature size can easily broken down into 6-8 pieces.
My mother in law had a bunch of that. Just buy 4 divide each one in two, plant in ammended soil and fertilize. Next year you can probably divide each in two or more. Dividing them accelerates growth.
I have over a hundred of them that came from just two huge clumps, it took me about an hour to break them down. Dunk the whole clump in a big bucket of water and give it a good shake to wash out as much of the soil as possible, this will make it easier to see where to divide.
FYI, I have done the same thing with pink Muhly grass and Fakahatchee grass.
