It amazes me this myth is still going around. Yes many people see ants on buds and then, lo and behold, the buds open into blooms. Only a coincidence. The ants are there to get the sap, not open buds. Many of us have beautiful blooms with not one single ant. We need to educate people.

I had heard that but didn't know if it was true. Thanks for confirming that it is not true!

I love peonies but don't have any planted in my yard. Any suggestions for a great bloomer in NC?

I think they all are if planted correctly with LOTS of sunshine.

I had cut peony flowers in a vase, a couple were still buds. They opened just fine. As far as I know, there are no ants in my house.

A friend of ours has a whole fence line of huge beautiful peony's, never seen an ant ever.

Never heard that myth.

More concerned that the bees and butterflies are rare this year. Usually in April they are here.

Peonies are a hot purchase right now in the cut flower market since they are in season. If someone insists that ants are needed for peonies to bloom, ask them how florists' shops and floral designers manage to work with them. I don't think florists would be so keen to sell them if they had to deal with ant bites and allergic reactions.

And, you know, ants getting into everything.

I personally like the single and semidouble ones:

I have a bunch of "Lotus Queens" just coming into bloom today. Plenty of ants dancing on the buds but the buds open all by themselves, thanks! This is another fave, called "Coral Sunset":
