It amazes me this myth is still going around. Yes many people see ants on buds and then, lo and behold, the buds open into blooms. Only a coincidence. The ants are there to get the sap, not open buds. Many of us have beautiful blooms with not one single ant. We need to educate people.
Peonies are a hot purchase right now in the cut flower market since they are in season. If someone insists that ants are needed for peonies to bloom, ask them how florists' shops and floral designers manage to work with them. I don't think florists would be so keen to sell them if they had to deal with ant bites and allergic reactions.
