I was driving along Hwy 158 and for three hours besides corn all I kept seeing huge farms after farms with this plant.

I had to stop and get a better look at but I am still stump on what kind of plant this is?

Soybeans. I am pretty sure those are soybeans. I will try to find a picture.

EDITED: I searched and some leaves seem more round but look at this picture - it looks awfully close to your pictures. See what you think.

That at least makes more sense than Pookie idea which was Okra.
but I could not think there was that much of demand for Okra due to the fields where huge and ran for least more than 200 miles.
It would make more sense to me that it is soybeans since it was near the packed corn fields they both are probably be sold as by product of other items.

I could be wrong but it looks like cotton, especially once I looked at the pic of the field.

My g/parents grew cotton but to be frank, I don't remember paying much attention to the plants until they had set flowers and then bolls. The way those plants are spaced in wide rows does look like cotton plants. I think soybeans would probably be planted in more narrow rows for harvesting. I found some pictures of nursery grown cotton plants below:

Live Cotton Plants

If you saw the plants in eastern NC or SC, it would make sense that they would be cotton plants.

I think JLRICH probably has it right! Sure is fun checking this stuff out.

Thanks for the backup. You're correct about the spacing of the plants. And soybean plants are much darker in color. I grew up in the Miss. Delta, not that that matters, but I've seen quite a few cotton plants. I almost sure its cotton. There is quite a bit of cotton grown in N.C. though.

ROFL!!! Ripping off a cotton plant!!! Hee Hee Hee. I don't think those are sweet taters, Sunny.

I would like to grow some sweet potatoes myself. Maybe we should see if we can find some tubers and start us a few plants. Is it too late in the season? Don't they grow into the Fall?????

They haven't planted sweet potatoes yet. They plant them after they crop the tobacco.
