I have watched one gray fox cross through my backyard for the past couple of years. Well, last night around midnight I heard this awful sound coming from the edge of the woods. I got my flashlight and went out to see what was going on and I saw two foxes near my goat pen. They ran a little further back into the woods when they saw me but they howled up a storm for about an hour (if thats what you call it). Is this like a mating call or something? Also, is there a chance they could dig under the fence and harm my goat?

Just a question, are you sure its foxes and not coyotes? I'm asking because my dad who's now in his 80's just recently mistook a gray fox for a coyote. He's a country boy, and been outdoors all his life. But he hadn't seen a gray fox in several years so he assumed what we saw was a coyote. When we gut back to the house, we pulled out a reference and I showed him what we saw was a fox.

Coyotes are all over the place now. Wouldn't surprise me if that's what it was.

I'm pretty sure they were foxes, when I shined the light I could see their bushy tails.

I've seen one sitting out there at night and eating pecans off of the ground, cracking the shells with his teeth.

Those bushy tails are pretty much a giveaway. Funny, I've never heard foxes yipping and yapping. Guess I need to spend even more time outside.

I thought the same thing, coyotes. Coyotes will send in a female coyote in heat to draw male dogs out and then they will kill them to eat. Very sneaky creatures. I have not heard of foxes howling either, but I have not been around the type you have there. I would think they could easily dig under a fence if they chose to. I would do what you can to protect all your outdoor animals.

Did it sound sort of like a pterodactyl? That's the mating call, all right.

Foxes howling gets old fast. We had several take up residence behind us, they burrowed into the hill. We had to call a federal trapper to get rid of them. But before he could, they took up residence at the far end of the road, so they are fine now. But they were pooping everywhere in front of my house, chasing my neighbors cats, growling at my little dog through our back fence, etc. Now I can identify fox poo and their howling, lol.

This site is really fun.
Sounds of the Fox

I thought I had heard all the fox calls there were until I heard these.
