I hear all kinds of horror stories on bamboos running over the entire yard. Is clumping type really safe to plant? I did a search on this. Some say even clumping types can get out of control.
no bamboo is safe as far as I'm concerned. Not even safe if you plant it in the pot only for the season. runners come thru the drainage holes. don't try it.

Clumping bamboos are a far safer gamble than any other out there..and while the clumps will slowly expand, they will not sprout up willy-nilly throughout the neighborhood..And NOTHING looks better than a large, matured clump of Giant black timber bamboo..which is a clumping type, as are most of the timber-type species..
The ones to avoid, all of the runners...those are terrible..
Clumping bamboo is OK. If you think that you'd like to plant bamboo, educate yourself before you put anything in the ground. Some varieties expand very slowly. There are open clumpers which can fill an area pretty quickly (for a clumping variety). Read articles or a book on the subject so that you can choose something that will be right for your climate and space. Buy from a reliable source. Bamboo is one thing that I'd never get from a discount or box store. You don't want to find out, too late, that you've put in a mislabeled running bamboo.
Don't ever plant running bamboo...not that you're threatening to.

Between bamboo and kudzu, all bases are covered for making your home a fortress of eye-catching beauty. ALL bamboo is gorgeous and anything covered in deep green vines just feels like home.
To go OT a little here. I watched Mythbusters over the weekend and they proved that you can use bamboo shoots as a method of torture! They rigged a dummy and laid it on bamboo shoots and in a couple days, the shoots were through the body ... yikes!!!! I'll keep my hydrangeas and butterfly bushes, thank you very much
