So now that it's fall, most of my lawn has turned brown and stopped growing. But I have noticed in the past few weeks I am getting bunches of tall, skinny, green stuff growing throughout my lawn. When I cut it with the mower it gives off a pungent odor. Any idea what this could be?
They're probably wild onions. I have them all over, too. When I dig them up, they look like the green onions you buy in the grocery store.
You're right, I just dug some of them up and they look like little onions. What I don't understand is why I never noticed this all summer, but now in the fall I see them. How do you get rid of them?
just pull 'em up when you see them, they do come out easily.
They are a drag, we get them here too...
The onion weeds are the 2nd bane of my gardening existence after clover....they usually just dry up after the winter is over here, so if you never bother they will go away when it's drier...(I'm in Ca. North Bay SF)

Yes, looks exactly like that. I'm assuming it's been there all along but because I haven't mowed my lawn now for about 3 weeks it is growing higher than usual.
They grow in cooler weather and will last all winter long. They die back after they have multiplied and the temperatures warm up in the spring. Use a weed and feel in the fall to get rid of them, or dig them out by hand.
Well, actually (yeah, have heard them called "wild onions" almost all of my life), but.....they are really a member of the Garlic family and are edible.
