I wonder if the Carruthers he's speaking of was from Scotland or England.
My mom just recently told me the story of how they ended up in Australia. They were from England and had relatives that came to the US in the early 1900s and settled in PA. Her family decided to join them here but something happened that they couldn't so they migrated to Sydney, Australia instead and that's where my mom was born. I don't know of any Carruthers here before then but I've never researched for them in the US. But there are plenty of people with that last name around.
I told her it's probably a good thing her family didn't come here back then because if they had it's doubtful she'd have ever met my dad and married him! They met during WWII when he was in Sydney on R&R but I guess he was there quite often between Pacific campaigns.
I believe Carruthers has its origins in Scotland and anyone in England with the name would have originated in Scotland. I'd love to able to prove something on this line as Carruthers is linked to King Robert Bruce.
I am a total neophyte at this stuff, but love it. Your posts are really interesting! I came across this link, Robert de Bruce arrived in England with William I, the Conqueror. Robert the Bruce
Has anybody been very surprised by their genealogy research?
Have you found anything you thought was completely different, an ancestry line you were completely unaware of, or something like that?
Yup, while growing up my mother would always tell me when I'd ask that we were of "French" decent when I questioned my dark skin, eyes and hair. On more than one occasion my mother was asked if I was adopted - back then many Indian children were stolen from their parents through legalized kidnapping. As I reached my late teens and early 20’s I was often asked by local ndn’s what tribe I was from and I kept telling them I was of “French” decent according to my mother and they’d roll their eyes.
There was always doubt in my soul that I was being lied to. Years later when I caught the genealogy bug, I had DNA testing done and found a significant amount of ndn blood. It comes from my father’s mother’s side and they hid it well. I have no idea how my father his mother and her parents “passed”. It’s still a brick wall and I hope one day to identify my tribal heritage. This line doesn’t account for all of my ndn blood, and there are also other brick walls that could very well be ndn, one being on my mother’s father’s side…LOL.
Anyone who might have known is long gone, so it will boil down to me digging and digging. I post on all the ancestry.com boards in hopes someone out there has a key to unlocking my mystery.
The true tragedy is my ancestors had to hide their heritage to survive, I’ve run across this often in people of my age group who’s ancestors were from the Southeast.

Yes, I know they originated in Scotland but I was wondering about the man who told you about his Carruthers line and whether they were from England or Scotland...in 'modern times'.
I wish I could remember the title of that book! I got it from a genealogy catalog that sold all kinds of books like that and it talked about the Carruthers/Bruce thing. My mom talks to her family on the phone all the time so I'll have her ask if they could send it back. I'm sure there's lot of info online as well in Scotland genealogy sites. I have 'some' of the Carruthers history and I'll look through it.
yes, when I was working on my father's side a few years back I found that I am directly related to the Nims family of the Deerfield Massacre, 1704...there is a ton of information on them and the family home still stands in Historic Deerfield, Ma....hope to get up there one day and see it!
I grew up I thinking I was southern Italian (might have heard it en passant from a family member who had also misunderstood it somehow, go figure) when in actuality all my family is northern!
I love both areas, so as much as I was happy to be able to learn the correct information, it really has not changed much for me.
I use Geni for my genealogy. I was pretty surprised when a forth cousin, once removed added my father into his list and contacted me, linking our trees...
I use Geni also but I have yet to find any relatives to link my tree to.
I found a First Cousin 1x Removed and his family, a Grand Uncle and his family, and two First Cousins (sisters).
I also found out that I'm more German than Irish (the Irish men kept marrying German women).
