Hello,

I've been doing my family history for some time now and have come against a huge stumbling block. I need help with my paternal grandfather on my mothers side. All I know is that his last name is Bass and he was in the Sunny Acres Sanitorium in Cleveland with my grandmother when my mother was conceived. My grandmother has since passed, so is there anyone who would know how to obtain records from the old sanitorum so I can continue my research. From what I hear the Bass family (African American) is pretty big in Cleveland granted it is a common name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A Sanitorium is a private institution. They don't have to allow you access to the records, even if they do still exist, which they likely don't. Your best bet would be to check with the local historical society to see if perhaps they were donated there.

A state sanitorium may have public records. Try asking a state library or archive. Might be unlikely, but you don't know until you ask.

According to this site it was a county hospital for tuberculosis patients:

STORIES TB HOSPITAL

Try contacting the county for a records query.
