Public doesn't necessarily mean free. Typically, you still have to pay a fee to whatever organization holds the records to obtain a copy of a record. And the existence of the records on Ancestry.com doesn't mean they aren't still available from their original free source. It's not like once something is on Ancestry.com, it ceases to exist anywhere else. They are but one source and you don't like to use them as a source, then don't.
