I've been trying to figure out the etymology, for lack of a better term, of my surname. The ending is "iglione," as in Castiglione, for example. This seems to be a common ending for Italian surnames, almost like a suffix. I'm wondering if there is a meaning to it. I tried searching in Italian, Latin, and even to some degree the dead language, Oscan. I've found this part of the surname to also be used for numerous towns, even rivers. Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks in advance.

Can't help you with the etymology, but I do have a question about pronunciation.

Do you make the attempt to get people to pronounce it correctly, or have you just accepted it that people will say "ig-lee-o-nee"?

I found the best resource for Italian surnames is https://www.ganino.com/cognomi_itali...gnomi_italiani - but it is all in Italian so you have to do your best to make sense of it with Google translator.

I usually pronounce the name "correctly" once with a smile, then don't bother after. I have a wave file from some folks in Italy. It's "il-eee-own-ay" with the "own" part longer than the rest. Most often my family just pronounces it "il-own."
