Who was the acting governor? I have one of those from Missouri (Hancock Lee Jackson) not far from your neck of the woods.

Oddest one? Shoemakers.

Farmers, Railroad workers, truck drivers.

My claustrophobic grandfather worked in the coal mines because there was no other jobs available during the depression. My mom said he'd come home first thing and take a stiff drink to take the edge off.....

Other grandfather worked in the mines as a carpenter shoring up the walls.

In additon to being housewives some female ancestors have been a glove maker, seamstress, and weavers.

How did your ancestors "bring home the bacon?"

Most of My ancestors were farmers, but one of them was also a surveyor for the state of Tennessee.

For some reason occupations have always interested me so I've paid attention to them a lot. Here are some more.

A great uncle who was a brakeman for a RR. Found him in a city directory just recently.

One of my English forbears is described as a "Herbalist" in several of the British Censae of the 1800s. Local drug pusher? Or like a pharmacist..hopefully.

My dad recently informed me that his gf started a dry cleaning business in the early 1900s.

One of my ggf's opened a grocery store in his later years. No social security back then, but he could make his living without hard physical work.
