I'm getting a little bored of the area and irritated with the nature of my current position right now.
I figure the company though is still good enough to remain with and would rather just take another position elsewhere with more stable hours.
Any ways, I feel as though within the past, year or so since the thought crossed my mind, I've put it off repeatedly.
If anything, it's mainly been the fear of calling around and web-searching for a decent enough place.
Only to find that available units typically vary from time to time.

Last thing I need to do is jump on the transfer when a spot opens up and then find myself having to live in a motel for an undetermined amount of time before an apartment becomes available.
Already have a decent apartment where I'm at right now and it seems that's the biggest thing that's keeping me from fully going through with a transfer.

I was living in a motel for about a year and a half here before finding my current place.
Not looking forward to doing that all over again.

Threading needles is difficult. Making that more important than the underlying matters is dumb.

Get over it but DO have a plan how to proceed.

1) Motel for UP TO a month as you research the best share situation
(commute, amenities, cost, person, etc)

2) Share for UP TO a year as you research the best rental situation
and/or make some friends to do the share situation with.

This suggests deeper and/or other issues at play.
Don't confuse them with the new job & move logistics.

Do your research in advance and find 4 apartment communities that you would move to. Then once you get the transfer, see which one has the availability. The more flexible you are, the more options you'll have. Each community generally has several floor plans, so be open to more than one, and you'll find a place.

Lived in a motel here due to apartments in the area getting snatched up quick thanks to the nearby air force base.
Nothing against military, but property owners and landlords seem to salivate over that guaranteed BAH afforded to most service members.

As far as commute goes, Phoenix area still seems pretty doable on a bicycle and I don't care about living in the so called "ghetto".

Not in a real hurry to get it done, but the cold weather and country folk are slowly grinding me into the ground over here.
On to the next one.

I should also add that calling in and looking online can only do so much.
I really want to do some scouting missions of the place before I finally get down there.
But driving distance and how often I'm getting called into work at my current location is making that evermore difficult to do.

I guess I'm also another victim of "inflated work abilities".

Unless it's a small town, you shouldn't have that problem again.

I am going through the same thing right now. I am working on trying to secure a transfer with the company that I work for, to my home state, and I just thank God that Google street view exists. When I find an apartment online that I may be interested in, I not only look at the ratings by current and former tenants (if available), but I also scan the area on Street view. If I see a plethora of liquor stores, payday loan places, bars on windows, jacked up vehicles, or get a general bad vibe, I move on and look elsewhere.

More than likely, I will probably stay at one of those extended stay suites for a little while, if this goes through. I just feel better actually SEEING the apartment in person, than a bunch of pictures someone has sent.

Guess those would be some obvious signs to start looking out for when it comes to my new apartment search.
Not necessarily worried about violent crime, but theft and things getting jacked are more of the main concern to me.

At this time, the transfer doesn't seem to have any real issue with going through.
But whenever I mention to my current terminal that I want to bounce over there, they seem to be giving me the guilt trip.
Telling me how short-handed they'll be again and that they got some less stressful runs coming up like the ones I originally got on for.
Psychological warfare and all because some bozos wanted to go down the street, or fell for that oilfield garbage.

Time to start manning up and sticking to my guns?
