Has anyone experienced the 26' diesels with auto trailer filled completely? I need gas mileage estimator. How much did you spend in gas? I have about 2100 miles to travel...
You could try googling your question: both UHaul and Penske have gas milage calculators on their pages.
A 26' truck could have a 57 gal tank, with 7 - 12 miles per gallon, depending on hills, weight, and such.
7 miles per gallon with 57 gallons = around 399 miles
2100 divided by 399 = about 5.2 fill ups
The last time I rented a 26' truck and filled it, I was getting about 6 mpg on a mostly flat drive.
When I budgeted for that trip, I took the worst case scenario: I called it 5 mpg and over-estimated the millage by 25 miles so that I'd have enough money saved. As I recall, the actual cost was something like $97 less when all was said and done.
I recently drove 2200 miles from Naples, FL to Tucson, AZ in 22 ft Penske diesel truck. I was also towing a car dolly with a 2 door vehicle on it.
I saw no better than 8 mpg (average 6) with approximately 200-250 miles to a tank before fuel gauge lit up. I know that the fuel tank was 50 gallons and the most I ever filled up was 35 gallons. The gauge wasn't too accurate but I followed it. You'll definitely need the fuel breaks driving a truck like that.
From Phoenix to Raleigh with a 26 foot box truck fully loaded towing a 2008 VW Rabbit I got about 8 mpg at best. Pulling the hill out of Phoenix to Flagstaff used about 25 gallons of diesel, the rest of the trip was much more manageable.
Gasbuddy.com has a trip estimator that accounts for fuel prices along the route. It's a handy tool, but keep in mind that the convenience of a truck stop's wide open lot and fast pumps means you'll pay a little more. It's worth it if you aren't skilled with the truck and trailer.
Also remember that diesel will foam up when filling the tank, slow it down when it gets close to full or you'll be enjoying a disgusting perfume until you can shower.
