When I 1st moved here, I felt a sense of relief to have someone look at my tag or my phone number and say, "what part of Florida are you from? I used to live in [blank]"

Now, I'm slightly annoyed by it with no particular reason why. But I think it upsets me because I still havent completely come to terms with Texas. To hear these people (allegedly) coming from Florida to here makes it seem that the thought of going back 'home' is less and less likely.

Plus, now I think...well if you're so happy to see a former Florida resident, why did you leave and come here? Not to mention so many of the locals ask me, "why would leave Florida to come out here?"

It just makes me feel so...like an outcast. As if I came here because I 'failed' and couldn't 'make it' back home. Or Is it just all in my mind?

It's all in your mind. People have an unrealistic image of Florida. They think it's beach heaven.

The reality is that the economy sucks and housing prices are super high. Many people are bailing from Florida. You're not the only one.

Keep in mind that a conversation about where you're from is an ice breaker.

When I moved to a new city, I made lots of friends due to the fact I was from somewhere else because it opened up many opportunities to have conversations with strangers.

Happiness is 10% location and 80% attitude! Lighten up!

I get asked the "why did you move here" question a lot, too. I moved from Alabama to Illinois.

If it's so bad here, why are you still here?

That is true. And with me getting ready to move to yet another new city (in the same state) I have to do the whole "hey, I'm new here" icebreakers all over again LOL.

And yes, I read an article couple months ago titled, "the mass exodus from Florida". Either they come here or go to the Carolinas from what I been hearing....

We made one move and it was the people native to that town that always asked us "why would you move here?" It happened so much, I was really puzzled that they didn't seem to appreciate what a good place they had, I can only guess its because they hadn't lived elsewhere. We left and even looking back, it was the best place we ever lived. We'd go back but its gotten too crowded now.
