Looks like the yearly population estimates were a complete crock. For millions of gov't dollars spent they did nothing more than state the obvious for some, but worse, give false hope for others.
Here's a look at some actual 2010 Census numbers vs 2009 estimates
Hamilton County, OH (Cincinnati
09 Est: 855,000 +10,000
10 actual: 802,000 -43,000
Christian County, KY (Hopkinsville)
09 Est: 81,000 +9,000
10 actual: 74,000 +2,000
St Louis City County, MO (St Louis)
09 Est: 356,000 + 8,000
10 actual: 319,00 -29,000

Actually a lot of evidence is it's the complete opposite. The estimates have seemed to have a lot more truth in them when compared to a multitude of evidence than actually trying to walk around cities and do a headcount.

Oh come off it. How can making a guess based on 'evidence', and yes, a guess based on evidence is still a guess, be more accurate than a census?
If you think the 2010 census was wrong, do you think the 2000 census was right? That's what the estimates are based on.

It's important that cities that have been losing population know if what they're trying is working or not. Cincinnati and St Louis received bogus information from the estimates that gave them false hope. How do you miscount by tens of THOUSANDS??!! If the estimates are that bad then I say eliminate them.

That's a little confusing calling it "city county" These numbers are the city, but they dont include the county at all, which is totally seperate and does not include the city of St. Louis.
St. Louis County '09 Estimate- 992,408 (-24,000 from 2000)
St. Louis County '10 Census- 998,954 (-17,000 from 2000)
So there was a decrease, but not as big of a decrease as expected. Shows that the estimates overestimate and underestimate.
The census miscounted the population of the city of Atlanta by over 100,000!
It just seems odd to be off by 33% - something doesnt make sense; Has anyone looked at the census tract data to see if areas that lost population offset those that grew. Realtive to some other cities it desnt seem that ATL would have a significant illegal pop to drive numbers like this and how could just this one micro area of ATL be that off while the rest of the metro mostly made sense. i am beggining to think the census number is closer to reality. But maybe with a similar error to most any other city.
