Other than Chicago, what big city (no less than 500,000 people) has the most active waterfront? There must be restaurants, shops, and a place to walk along with boating docks. I need a city with a great waterfront.

I'm sure both coasts have a lot. You know, Chicago has an active waterfront only in terms of the lakefront path and greenery/park. Not a lot of shops or restaurants (other than Navy Pier).

I’ve heard a lot of good things Fort Lauderdale’s boating. They call it America’s Venice or something, right? I’m a boater, I need a place that’s active, has landscape diversity, waterway diversity (not just some round lake), restaurants, shops, and most importantly, docks. Ft. Lauderdale seems to have all that except the landscape.

Fort Lauderdale is known as "Venice of America" due to the MANY canals, lakes(ok, not that many lakes), rivers, and waterways that are there, but yeah, its nothing but flat, flat flat here! It has everything else you are looking for, though. Its easier to get around Lauderdale by boat than it is by car. It's a boaters paradise, but you PAY for a house with a dock.
