Does anyone have a table of population by area code? I can't seem to find one.
The resources to create one seem to be lacking. One would need a solid database of cities/towns with their area codes and populations. I found one such database online that was greatly lacking when I calculated the population by area code.
Does anyone know of a database of cities/towns with both their correct populations and area codes?
I can easily calculate the populations of the twelve states that have exactly one area code. 38 to go.
I think it would be too hard since the only boundary that holds them are state boundaries. The aren't consistent by county line, and of course you have overlay area codes.
People don't often live in the area associated to their area codes. Then there are mobile-only area codes. The area code no longer really denotes a physical location. I can hop on google voice and get a local number for any US city.
There are sources that allow you to view which counties are in an area code and from there, you can add the populations of each county up. I'm not sure if there are counties in multiple area codes, but I don't think that is the case.

That doesn't work. Area code boundaries slice through counties and towns. If you're a GIS user, you could get an area codes polygon shape file and a census block shapefile and do selection queries and sum up the population field of all selected census blocks, but that would be tedious AF.

I would think with area code overlays these days, there are some counties out there in multiple area codes.
