Miami is probably more liberal as far as anything goes stuff, but I think Atlanta is probably the more progressive city in terms of community/arts/policies etc. Might consider moving up to Atlanta? I'd avoid all those college cities on the list seeing that you are over 40. I would actually say to avoid them if you are over 30.

For the most liberal place in the south? The DMV area by FAR and away.
But is DC a Southern city? Let's be honest here. And SoFla as a whole, as far as counties go, have more blue areas in the burbs than Austin's burbs do. Palm Beach and Broward are reliably blue. Can't say the same for Williamson County and the others surrounding Austin. There's not many major metros in the South that have as many reliably blue counties surrounding the principal city the way SoFla does.

This thread has been really helpful for me. Am considering moving back to the south in a few years, and was curious if there were any liberal/progressive cities to look into. Have heard a lot of lovely things about Chapel Hill, NC.

Coastal southern Cali seems like the logical choice, but it is very expensive and I'm not a big fan of the materialism of southern Cali. . Right now, Austin seems like the best choice. More affordable than CA, hip, progressive, pretty, lots of great music...
Why do you think California is very expensive and who do you think goes running to Austin, Texas? California liberals.

Yeah and that is the difference, you can get to many smaller liberal communites all through FL than you can in Texas.

Palm Beach and Broward are just loaded with retirees. You have the died in the wool Northeastern liberals who would never even so much as look at a Republican. But they are in bed by 9PM and a cultural experience is pot luck dinners at the community center. I would rather live in a diverse community, not just skin color. But also age ,political view point, lifestyle and religion. For a progressive young person I would think that Jax Beach or Riverside section of Jax would be much more enjoyable to live in than Boca Raton even though the Democrat party dominates PBC and not so much in Duval County.

What I don't care for in much of South Florida, is the fact that people never make it HOME, its where they retire. Home is still NJ, NY, MI or OH. To me Jacksonville and Miami are the "realest" cities in the state. Tampa Bay has a larger seasonal population and Orlando is just so driven by tourism.

Go to any Black neighborhood in Palm Beach or Broward, and you'll see many Florida natives and native Southerners. It's not all retirees from the NE.

Really if you looking for liberal state or city you not going find that any where in the US even Canada other than may be Quebec ( Canada is more conservative now they keep voting Harper in .There are many people in north east part of US and west coast of US and even in Canada that are conservative and really really religious too. If you looking for more liberal or far liberal like Michael Moore move to Europe.

Or move any where in the US and just find some friends that are liberal , try punk rock groups they are normally really rebellious.

Not really. Orlando proper doesn't really feel touristy at all. Going to Orlando and staying down by I-Drive/Disney Stuff/Kissimmee then saying it's touristy is like going to NYC and never leaving Times Square. It's one of the most stereotyped and underrated cities on here I'd say. It has also changed a lot in the last 10 years. You have areas like Little Vietnam that can give other cities runs for their money, and a decent night life, it's diverse and has lots of transplants.

For somebody who says they want to move somewhere liberal and progressive I couldn't recommend Jacksonville with a straight face, I mean yeah there are some liberal areas around there, and I suppose some if you go down towards St. Augustine. Jacksonville and Pensacola are probably the most conservative small-mid cities in the state.

Yeah, Little Saigon/ViMi district in Orlando has become a legit ethnic enclave. Orlando is an underrated city.
