This is a thread to vote on and discuss the best city in the "Southeast". I only included the cities in the poll due to those being the only cities of importance to my fiance' and I.

I am basing the Poll as well as the general discussion on 2 factors:

1. Cost of living/housing/rent. (Will where you be able to get the most house for your buck)

2. Overall condition of the city/things to do (Where will your dollar get you the furthest, give you the most things to do, best for a family, where will you be the safest)

If you have any previous experience with a city or know someone that does please share it.

I kind of want to keep this on a larger-city base but we can include suburbs in the same area of a big city like Maryville is to Knoxville.

(I included 3 cities in each state).

I voted for Greensboro which flies under the radar living in the shadow of Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte and to a lesser extent Asheville. It's the third largest city in NC and offers a low cost of living, a low crime rate in areas that the OP would most likely choose to live in and provides lots of family friendly activities. The west/northwest neighborhoods around Guilford College and the Friendly Center are my recommendations. It's a beautiful city with a lot to offer.

There are lots of good cities on your list. You probably noticed Maryville because it has good schools. Narrow it down to cities with good schools in the city or nearby, then think about do you want to be near the ocean, mountains, or in between.

It might be time for a road trip.

Raleigh, Nashville, and Charlotte are my top choices. Asheville is super hippie stoner land. Charlestons also nice if your not a big fan of diversity and you promise to never break down on the northside of town.

Morganton, NC is highly rated as one of the best places to raise to family.

It isn't on your list but if you are willing to venture outside your list a bit I would look at Williamsburg, VA. One of my favorite cities...it's great for history, great for jobs, and deals with a relatively low amount of damage from hurricanes compared to other southeastern cities.

Charlotte is a popular destination these days, but its unemployment rate rate is over 10%. Charleston is supposed to be beautiful, but also expensive, without the economy to back up the cost of living. I guess the answer is wherever you can find a job with a living wage.
