I've lived in Portland for 2 1/2 years, and Oregon since 2001 and I'm kind of sick of it. I'm almost 24 years old.
I love Oregon but life is short and I want to experience living somewhere else for a while.
My criterion are this:
1) Not in the west. So Colorado, the Southwest etc is out of the question.
2) Not a place that is hot and humid 1/2 the year or more.
3) Ideally at least a little bit of snow.
4) Somewhere I can live without a car.
5) A place I could rent or at least roomshare for $500/month or less.
6) A liberal or at least centrist political climate. Ideally socialist.
7) Somewhere with at least an OK job market.
So basically probably somewhere in the Northeast, but a highland climate in the South or somewhere fairly progressive in the Midwest isn't out of the question either. I was thinking of Boston but heard it's very expensive, and also was thinking of Portland Maine but it's quite small and also expensive with little work.
Boston would be the best fit and not all that expensive if you're sharing rent without a car, which are the two most expensive budget components. You'll have to bump up your housing budget a bit ($550-$600) but consider for example the average hourly service sector wage in the area is around $12 an hour or more.
That's going to be a hard sale. I would've said New Orleans but it might snow one day for a half inch and it's very hot and humid but fits all other criteria.
Baltimore sounds like a perfect candidate, I've never been but it seems cheap enough, urban, close to DC, a little snow, etc.

I would look into Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Buffalo and Cleveland.
Buffalo may fit actually. Especially in neighborhoods in North Buffalo or right along Main Street. Perhaps some college towns in the Northeast and Midwest too.
