That's very good.

However, since Chicago has record low murders then I wonder why Chicago violent crime was so hyped by the media this year?

From what I can remember, Chicago crime was rarely mentioned before the last 2 years or so by the national media.

Well Obama is from here and I think that made it a lightning rod. It also had more murders than NYC or LA, although chicagos rate of murder is pretty much middle of the pack for larger cities.

The article is also wrong, it isn't the lowest murder count since the 1970s it's the lowest since the mid 1960s.

Last year when everyone was screaming about chicagos "record homicide rate".....the irony was it actually still had a lower count than any year from 1967 to 2003.

2003 and 40 years prior had at least 50% MORE murders than we have now, but for whatever reason it wasn't anywhere near the news this is.

Yes, Oakland had a 30% drop in murders in 2013 compared to 2012. There has been a drop in violent crime overall.

About the media coverage. Bay Area media salivates over any bad news that happens in Oakland. Just reading the papers online and watching tv news stories about our murder decline in 2013 and it's as if the media is almost disappointed.

Incredible considering Detroit has less than 1/11th the population of NYC.

"3. Detroit - 332"

WOW Detroit!

In comparison, Seattle had a total of 23 murders! The Seattle Times reported that the tally was 29 homicides for 2013 (as of Dec. 27). However, 6 of the homicides were (apparently) justified officer involved shootings. I don't think those should be included in the rate.
