Tennis is boring. I just yawned thinking about it. I like team sports like Hockey, American Football, occasional Soccer and Baseball. Besides, who doesn't enjoy a good hit over some dude prancing around in super short shorts dripping with sweat in white no less? I don't care to see that.
Don't like Basketball either. Not enough defense and too many stoppages. By my math, it seems that between teams full time outs, 30 second times outs, half second time outs, bathroom time outs, TV timeouts, that other team made 2 shots in a row we need to stop that momentum time outs, snack bar time outs, Referee needs to touch the ball time out, and let's huddle and talk about how we need to put the ball in the basket more than the other team time outs, each team is relegated to no less than 250 timeouts per half.
Granted, I like baseball but I agree, too much standing around day dreaming on the mound along with all the landscaping, staring into the crowd, trying to access all the hidden substances on their body, sampling of the dirt, tasting the dirt, re-adjusting the glove, cleaning the ball, and reapplying illegal substances to the ball they just cleaned; it seems pitchers waste about 4 of the 5 hours needed to play an entire baseball game with these antics.
Why do Americans like sports with no class, violence, and "I'M A MANN!!!! 'MURICA!!!" sports like the NFL and NBA? It's always made me curious. In tennis, one has to have speed, stamina, flexibility, agility, strength, and power. The NBA and NFL don't need that because each role is relegated to one person...you don't necessarily need to be fast and flexible in NFL, because some of your other teammates do.
And another BIG point is the mental aspect. In tennis, you are ALONE on the court. You have to strategize, you have to pump yourself up, you have to fix things, you YOURSELF has to do everything. Which is why the mental aspect is one of THE toughest sports out there: focus, mental stamina, determination, positivity.
Also, unlike in timed sports, like in the NBA, you can have hypothetically a 30 point lead with 2 minutes left. You are basically GUARANTEED to win. However, in tennis, even if you're leading 6-0 5-0 40-00, it's not over till it's OVER. You can't just suddenly not play because you have match point...or else you'll lose.
Also, tennis has CLASS, you can't make a noise during the points (funny how the US Open has the worst crowd in terms of that ), no physical confrontation with opponents, you're not bumping and pushing into your opponent, there is a sense of DIGNITY.
Now why do Americans prefer the NBA and NFL then? Is it the attributes they see in the NBA and NFL that they like?
Why are you singling out Americans for liking sports with no "class"? Most of the world loves soccer more than tennis, and soccer is no "classier" than American football or basketball.
Tennis is one of the few sports--maybe the only sport--where the women's game is as popular as the men's (sometimes even more popular). The Slams also have equal pay among men and women, which can't be said about too many other sports.
Suzanne Lenglen took the United States by storm during the Roaring 20s. Rumor has it that she never saw a man, a cigarette or a glass of whiskey she didn't love.
