Are there areas and/or cities that you have experienced, lived in or even know about that seem to be hard on themselves in terms of image, things to do, how it looks/appears or just in general?

I have meet people over the years who have tried very hard to hide the fact that they are from the Bronx. And these were working, middle-class people , or the children of the same, who lived in some of that borough's nicer neighborhoods. The Bronx is a huge place of course -- 1.4 million people --with all sorts of neighborhoods. But of course the stereotype is that every square inch of the Bronx is a crime-ridden, poverty-stricken, Spanish-speaking, ugly mess. For sure a lot of it is. But certainly not everywhere. Sometimes I guess people would rather hide where they live than risk getting looked down on or having to explain all the distinctions between different neighborhoods during casual conversation.

The beautiful, dynamic, fascinating, frustrating, ornery, deep and incomprehensible American Middle West.
