Upscale and diverse, where you can walk to the grocery or grab a cup of coffee with a friend...somewhere where kids feel safe going outside to play with the neighbors...good schools, good conversation and access to the arts. Near a major city would be nice too. Does this exist?
There's plenty of places like this, especially in the inner suburban areas of the Northeast where early streetcar usage spawned more pedestrian-friendly development. Actually, sounds a lot like Manhattan Beach to me. Any of the beach cities south of L.A. are great places to drop off the kids, stop by the coffee house and meet a few friends. Plenty of interesting shops, cultural activities, and art galleries nearby. You'll have to drive to L.A. or up to the Getty for an art museum, however.
