So many people here on C-D ask about crime when it comes to relocating, and so many answers about many cities talk about the crime rates in different neighborhoods.
But the violent crime rate has plummeted in the U.S. as a whole and in many of its largest cities as well.
See here :
FBI — Table 1
So what's the fixation with this, "Is it safe?" thing in your opinion, considering that most places ARE safe.
Granted everyone wants to live somewhere safe. I certainly do. But the emphasis on crime rates, safety, whether people can bear arms to defend themselves, etc etc seems WAY out proportion to a person's actual chance of being victim of a violent crime. I also grant that specific neighborhoods can be dangerous. But they're pretty easy to avoid most times and they're not MOST places in the U.S., or even most places in most cities. So why do we dwell on the possibilities?
--TV news plays up crime? (If it bleeds it leads)
--The Internet and social media, so that what was once only local crime news is now national?
--Violent crime has decreased in cities but increased in suburbia, where most people now live?
--NRA and its allies fear-mongering?
--Some people are just too young to remember a generation ago when crime was really much worse?
--Fear of the other rising (Mexican immigrant, black male) as national demographics change?
--Something else?
What do you think?
